Public information meeting in Nybro on 11 February
On 11 February, the consultation phase for the environmental permit process begins for the planned carbon-negative heat and power facility in Nybro. To mark the start, Nordbex will host an open information meeting where the public can get an update on the project and learn how the permitting and consultation process will proceed.
Time: 17:00–20:00
Venue: Stadshussalen (Stora Hotellet, floor 1), Nybro
Presentation: A project and permitting presentation will be held at 18:00
Everyone is welcome to attend, ask questions, and learn more about what the project could mean for the region and the climate.
What the project is about
Nordbex is planning a carbon-negative combined heat and power facility that uses forestry residues as fuel. The project is based on BECCS (Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage): biomass has absorbed CO₂ from the atmosphere during its growth, and when it is used to produce heat and electricity, the CO₂ released is captured. The captured CO₂ is then intended to be permanently stored in geological formations, for example beneath the seabed.
In simple terms, the goal is a net-negative outcome—removing more CO₂ from the atmosphere than the process emits overall.
Project progress and next steps
Since the project was first presented, work has advanced significantly. Current priorities include updating the local development plan for the site, preparing the environmental permit application, and securing grid connection—three key steps for moving forward.
Key activities include:
Local development plan: The area is already designated for industrial use, but adjustments are being prepared to match the project’s needs.
Environmental permit: Material has been submitted to the County Administrative Board and consultation with stakeholders is starting.
Grid connection: A study is underway to confirm grid integration, carried out by E.ON.
Environmental studies: Ongoing work to reduce environmental impact and meet required standards.
What do “local development plan” and “environmental permit” mean?
The local development plan governs how land and buildings can be used within an area. Updating it helps ensure the site is fit for purpose and aligned with municipal planning.
An environmental permit is a legal requirement for activities that may affect the environment, ensuring the project is carried out responsibly and that human health and environmental standards are protected.
